8/22/17 – Anchovies

Welcome to Five Course Trivia! Five days a week, we’ll post five questions about something from the culinary world, from soup to nuts and all dishes in between.

First of all, be sure to try your hand at the Five Course Trivia contest, found at last Friday’s post! Link [here].

Tomorrow is LL74! I wish everyone a lot of luck with this season. I’ll be playing along, and I plan to do food posts the day after each food or drink question. For now, anchovies seems like a fine enough subject I haven’t touched yet. Enjoy!

1. Though it sounds like it should be made with chicken, name the English dish seen here, basically a piece of toast topped with scrambled eggs and anchovies.

Question 1

2. The butter seen here, which is flavored with mustard, herbs, and anchovies, is named Café de ___ butter, which takes its name from the name of a restaurant in Geneva, Switzerland, although the city in the name of the restaurant is not Swiss. Name that city.

Question 2

3. Give the last names of Worcester chemists John Wheeley and William Henry, who developed Worcestershire sauce in the 1830s. The sauce originally was created to recreate the anchovy flavor into a sauce.

4. What name is often given to anchovies served in Europe, especially those served in Spain? Its most popular dish in Spain involves preparing them in vinegar, as seen here.

Question 4

5. Name the man whose profile is shown on this tin.

Question 5

1. Scotch woodcock
2. Paris
3. Lea, Perrins
4. Boquerones
5. King Oscar
