2/3/2016 – World Wednesday – Britain


Welcome to Five Course Trivia! Five days a week, we’ll post five questions about something from the culinary world, from soup to nuts and all dishes in between.

Today marks the fifth World Wednesday, and today, we’ll be covering British foods, but not specifically. While of course there are hundreds of dishes native to the Isles (some of which we have covered in previous issues, from spotted dick and Battenberg cake), we’ll be covering British food names.

As you probably know, their “lift” is our “elevator”, their “petrol” is our “gasoline”, and “skeleton in the cupboard” is our “skeleton in the closet”. And thus, some of our food is also different.

Today’s exercise is straight-forward enough: I give you the UK word for a food term, you give me the American name. From what I can tell, these are the general terms, so you might get a word that is a subgroup of another, but these seem to be the words that stand for the overall group.

Also, in a trivia aspect, you can’t know UK/US vocabulary enough.
